Satellite thermal-hotspot detections (VIIRS) — a gas-flaring and thermal-activity proxy at well-site resolution.

What is NASA VIIRS Flaring?

NASA VIIRS Thermal Hotspots & Fire Activity — near-real-time satellite thermal detections that serve as a proxy for gas flaring and burn/thermal activity near well sites and facilities. Search by bounding box, minimum fire radiative power (FRP, in megawatts), detection confidence (low/nominal/high), day/night, and recency, or pull all detections within a radius of a well's lat/lon. Complements the CarbonMapper and ClimateTrace connectors: those quantify emissions, while this surfaces the raw daily thermal detections. Toggle on and use — no setup needed.

Available Tools

  • searchThermalHotspots
Search VIIRS thermal hotspots by bbox, min FRP, confidence, day/night, and recency.
  • getHotspotsNearWell
Thermal hotspots within a radius (km) of a well lat/lon.
  • getServiceInfo
Field meanings and valid confidence/day-night values.

Quick Setup Guide

Follow these steps to connect your AI agents to this connector

Open /mcp and enable NASA VIIRS Flaring with the toggle — no credentials needed.

Call getHotspotsNearWell with a well's lat/lon, or searchThermalHotspots over a basin bbox with a minFrp threshold.
