What is IL State Geological Survey?

Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS) — Illinois's official state geological survey. The ILOIL service surface publishes ~207,101 oil and gas wells via layer 8 (note: the wells layer is at index 8, not 0) with a rich schema: API_NUMBER, COMP_DATE, PERMIT_NUMBER, PERMIT_DATE, STATUS code (OIL/OILP/DAP/INJW/...), STATUS_TEXT descriptive (Oil Producer, Oil Producer Plugged, Dry and Abandoned, Water Injection Well, Stratigraphic Test,...), COMPANY_NAME, FARM_NAME, TOTAL_DEPTH, TDFORMATION/TDFMTEXT, LATITUDE/LONGITUDE. Field polygons split across two services: legacy Oil_and_Gas_Fields (~550 polygons, FIELD_TYPE: OIL/GAS/GAS STORAGE) and canonical Oil_Gas_GasStor_Fields_2024 (~1,000+ polygons; brief listed _2023 which is now 404). §0 spec drift caught: Wells layer at index 8, not 0; STATUS column has 100+ codes and STATUS_TEXT has 100+ descriptive variants; FIELD_TYPE on legacy uses upper-snake while FIELDTYPE on 2024 uses camelCase. ; responses normalized to WGS84. Last verified live 2026-05-07.
